With Maidstone's long history a good number of famous people have been born, lived or worked here for parts of their lives. The most famous are listed below. William Caxton was a local man, purported to have been born just south of Maidstone, and was voted as one of the top 100 Britons' in 2002, for the introduction of the first printing press to Britain.
Maidstone was also a stop on the Pilgrimage Route from London to Canterbury and was a major stop over, for Henry VIII and his entourage who stayed at the Archbishop's Palace.
