For those who prefer to explore the Kent countryside on two wheels, there are some great cycling routes around Maidstone. Adventurous cyclists will appreciate the challenge offered by the North Downs Way and the Pilgrims Way, which can be ridden in full, or tackled in sections with lots of easy access points along the way. Alternatively, Mote Park and Maidstone River Park offer a family-friendly, traffic-free cycling experience.
Cycling through the wonderful countryside in the quiet lanes of the Weald is perfect, taking in vineyards, historic houses and a host of wonderful scenery. If you don't have your own bike you can hire an electric bike from UK Electric Bike Hire. What a pleasurable way to enjoy the countryside, either on one of the organised routes or by exploring the lanes yourself. Whatever bike you ride, Explore Kent has further details of local cycle routes, with downloadable maps and directions.
The river path which runs from Allington Lock to East Farleigh has been upgraded from a walking route to a cycle path. Walkers are of course still welcome, and it's a delightful way to travel and explore the River Medway. Find the downloadable map for the River Medway Cycle Path.
Check out our new cycle routes around the beautiful Wealden countryside, starting from Headcorn, Staplehurst, Marden and Yalding stations. These can be downloaded from our maps and publications page.
Mote Park offers a free to use BMX track, for those who are looking to practice different cycling skills and excitement. Some cyclists love a hill climb and the Maidstone area offers a few very good hills for this. Anywhere along the Greensand ridge, through Linton, Sutton Valence, Hunton and even Yalding you will find some challenging hill climbs. The same can be said for the North Downs, anywhere from Bluebell Hill, through to Boxley, Thurnham and Hollingbourne, all have good hills.
