Thurnham Castle, 6km north of Maidstone, stands on a spur of the chalk ridge of the North Downs overlooking the vale of Holmesdale. The history of this ringwork and bailey castle is mysterious. It was first mentioned in a document of 1225 but the castle may be much older than this, perhaps dating back to the late 11th Century.
Today it is at the heart of the White Horse Country Park where the heritage trail begins.
